Vital force itself produces disease. Aphorisms 12 Organon

Today we will discuss aphorism 12 of the Organon. This aphorism says that the vital force itself produces disease. In this passage, Mahatma Samuel Hahnemann expresses his understanding of how disease is produced in our bodies. I am discussing here the knowledge that I have gained by reading the Bengali-translated Organon of Mahamati Dr. G. Dirghangi.

First, we will take a look at Aphorism 12 of the Organon.

In today’s discussion, we are going to know all the things in brief, which are:

1) Who produces disease in our body?
2) How much of the disease can a doctor know?
3) How many causes of disease appear in the body?
4) What is the manifestation or shape of the disease?
5) If the disease is cured, how can it be understood?

Now let’s come to the discussion. We will discuss the issues mentioned sequentially.

Who produces disease in our body?

The answer to this question is that the vital principle affected by malefic energy itself produces disease. That is, as soon as our vital force is attacked by an evil invisible force, immediately our vital force also develops resistance against that evil force. The vital force tries its best to defeat this evil force. But if that malefic energy is stronger than the affected life force, then the affected life force needs the help of an outside force to get rid of the disease. In the hope of seeking and receiving help from outside the body to defeat the malefic disease energy, the vital force manifests certain disease symptoms in the body and mind. It is said that these symptoms are the language of the vital force asking for help.

That is, we realized that evil energy or disease energy does not cause disease in our body. When the disease energy attacks the vital force, the vital force produces some distorted disease symptoms in the body and mind, hoping for help. Therefore, according to the homeopathic philosophy, the vital force should be treated.

If the vitality is healthy, the disease will be eliminated. This is why the principle of homeopathic treatment is to treat the patient, not the disease. That is, treat the patient, not the disease.

How much of the disease can a doctor know?

Aphorisms 12 of the Organon deal with this in footnote 8. It is said in this footnote, that how the vital energy affected by disease becomes sick and produces disease symptoms in our body is a very complicated matter. A doctor cannot know it completely and probably never will. To a physician, only so much of this theory is revealed by the Lord of Life, as he knows that the cure of the disease will be possible. That is, all the symptoms that can identify the entire disease are not fully manifested in our body. Only partial symptoms are revealed to a doctor.

How many causes of disease appear in the body?

Behind every painful disease, there are two symptoms

1) Internal and
2) External

The effects of these two factors must be present. Let’s understand with an example:

A thorn in any part of the body causes pain.

So here are the three direct elements we have:

1) Complicated disease symptoms = pain at the puncture site.
2) Extrinsic/obese = thorn.
3) Internal/subtle causes = action of vital force on the affected organ.

Now let’s discuss: A perishable organ does not contain vital force. So there is no feeling of pain, even if there is a cut or any kind of injury. As there is no action of vital force in this place, there is no sensation of pain.

That is, it is understood that the action of a vital force must be active for us to suffer from diseases. That is, the inner cause must be related to the vital force.

External causes can be of two types: subtle and gross. Thorns, needles, nails, pins, or any injury are gross causes. Skin diseases, tumors, and chronic respiratory problems are all caused by subtle disease energy, or malefic disease energy.

These energies are invisible and are the subtle causes of disease.

That is, we find that all the painful symptoms we suffer from have both external and internal causes. External causes can be of two types, subtle and gross.

What is the manifestation or shape of the disease?

When our vital energy is affected by evil disease energy, an invisible internal change takes place at the subtle level of vital energy. What is the shape of this invisible internal change? The disease causes a healthy person to become ill. In this sick state, some physical and mental changes occur in the patient due to the disease’s symptoms.

These visible external changes associated with disease symptoms are the shape of the invisible internal changes.

If the disease is removed, how can it be understood?

That is, the treatment should be conducted keeping in view the internal disorder of the patient. Inner chaos must be treated. If the inner disorder is removed by proper treatment, all outwardly visible disease symptoms will disappear. However, it must be remembered that the external disease symptoms must be completely and holistically eliminated. The patient will recover from all the symptoms. Only partial relief of one or two disease symptoms is not a true cure. That is, at the end of the treatment, both the vitality and the organism will regain full health. This is the essence of homeopathic treatment.
